Golf Swing Basics - How to Improve Your Game

Golf is one of those games that have managed to capture our attention for many years more so when the best of the best are competing against one another. However, for most people the flawless nature of the game these professionals display tends to be beyond reach.

Golf has the capacity to relax and infuriate at the same time, but for the avid lover of the game the latter is sure to become a thing of the past once the golf swing basics have been sorted out.

The first step in the golf swing basics training session is the posture of the player because if this fundamental aspect of the golf game is not accurate, then the entire game will be ruined. In order to get it right, the player should ensure that the body is properly aligned with regards to the feet, hips and shoulders. This can be achieved by placing the golf club on the green in the direction of the hole, then standing perpendicular to the handle which should act as a guide for direction.

Once the body's position has been sorted during the golf swing basics session, the next step is the golf club grip. Here there are several alternatives one of which is the ten finger grip and as the name suggests, this is an easy one but for the avid golfer the interlocking grip should work just as well. As the name suggests, the fingers interlock gives the player a firm grip on the club but if the agenda is to take the golf swing basics to the next level, then there is the overlapping grip.

In order to get that strong swing, exercise is important in order to keep the body flexible enough to make good shots without straining any muscles. Simple stretches should loosen up the muscles and give the body the capacity to move easily while taking the shot.

With the swing itself, the grip should be just right because if it is too tight then the ball may veer off course and the same thing will happen if the grip is too loose. The club should be held in a firm manner that gives the player the necessary control over the club and the outcome of the game.

Last but not least, the entire body has got to move along with the swing so that the ball gets to its intended target. From the draw all the way to the drive, the shoulders, hips and feet have got to move in a synchronized so that every single shot is nothing short of perfect.

How to Improve the Spine Angle in Your Golf Swing

A common golf swing fault is a change in the spine angle during the phases of the golf swing. This single movement causes a chain reaction of compensations that alter the mechanics of your golf swing immensely. The result is usually inconsistency and a myriad of poor golf shots. Leading to frustration on the golf course and high scores.

The question that arises in my mind about this swing fault is; how can the amateur golfer improve their spine angle in the golf swing? The result would be an end to changes that oh so often hamper golfers of every level. Speaking with PGA Teaching professional Christopher Smith on this subject allowed me to get to one of the roots of this common swing fault.

According to Christopher Smith the changing of the spine angle is a common fault of the 1000's of golfers he works with every year. A common spine angle change Christopher indicated to me was immediately at the beginning of the back swing. Often he views golfers who stand up during their back swing. This obviously changes their spine angle and not to mention posture. Resulting in a chain reaction of compensations in the golf swing.

Once Christopher demonstrated this common spine angle changed I immediately knew one of the "fixes" for it. Observation of Christopher performing this specific spine angle change of standing up during the back swing told me one important thing. This so-called swing fault of standing up may be better categorized as a flexibility fault.

Yes, a flexibility fault as I like to call it is when a golfer's lack of flexibility impedes them from performing the mechanics of the golf swing correctly. Flexibility faults are often misdiagnosed as swing faults. As a result, the golfer dubiously works on fixing their golf swing with no avail. They continue to struggle with standing up during their back swing and never fix it or understand why it is happening. The reason is they are trying "fix" the problem with the incorrect medicine.

The correct medicine would be the implementation of golf flexibility exercises. This type of fix would allow the golfer in such a situation to perform the mechanics of the swing correctly without limitations in their body getting in the way. Sounds pretty simple when you map out in such a way.

Now getting back to the spine angle problem Christopher Smith was discussing. The standing up during the backswing can partly be described as a flexibility fault. In such a situation this is telling me the golfer has some flexibility issues limiting their ability to maintain the correct posture during the back swing. In such a situation (i.e. standing up during the backswing) we can pinpoint the flexibility fault to hip region of the body.

The hips need to be flexible and mobile to allow the golfer to maintain a fixed spine angle and rotate around it during the golf swing. If the hips are tight and inflexible the ability to do this will be compromised as in the example of standing up during the back swing.

Now looking specifically at the spine angle change of standing up we can even pin point to a greater extent the exact muscles in the hips causing this "flexibility fault". Usually with a golfer that stands up during the backswing I find they have tight hip flexors. Hip flexors are muscles that run across the front part of the hip on both legs. These muscles when tight (i.e. inflexible) "pull" the hips underneath your spine. Making it almost impossible to maintain the spine angle set in the address position. Once you begin the back swing and suffer from "tight" hip flexors. These muscles will "pull your hips" underneath your spine, causing you to stand up. The end result is a change in your spine angle and a series of compensations in the golf swing to follow.

How do we fix this flexibility fault, get those tight hip flexors mobile, and improve your golf swing? Simply by adding a series of golf fitness flexibility exercises to your golf swing improvement program. These types of exercises take just a few minutes a day to perform. They will alleviate the tightness in your hips and in the long run improve your golf swing.

Simple yet very effective golf fitness flexibility exercises I like to use for tight hip flexors are the kneeling hip flexor stretch, standing quadriceps, and spider. All three of these golf fitness flexibility exercise focus on the hip flexors. Over time these flexibility exercises will lengthen (i.e. stretch) those tight hip flexors. Allowing you greater mobility in the hips and eliminate one of the reasons for standing up in the back swing.

So remember, it is necessary to maintain a fixed spine angle during the golf swing. If you do not a whole series of compensations will occur. The end result will be an inconsistent golf swing. One such reason for a change in your spine angle may be standing up during the back swing. This swing fault is often a flexibility fault resulting from tight hips. The implementation of golf fitness flexibility exercises in a short amount of time can fix this flexibility fault and stop you from standing up during the back swing. Resulting in a more consistent golf swing. Keep in mind the connection between your body and the golf swing, and realize it is the body swinging the golf club.

Before getting on the golf course, it's vital that your body is fully prepared physically and particularly your muscles that will be needed for your golf swing.

Stretching exercises are a vital part of golf swing training. Exercises specific to golf can be very powerful and extremely effective in achieving a better golf swing.

The great thing is that you don't have to be in the gym for a long period of time or away from your work place to carry out many golf swing stretch exercises. There are loads of stretching exercises that can be done in a spare moment in your office, all through the day.

Useful Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing

We all have heard a lot about the professional golfer Tiger Wood. Well, everyone wants to play like him and learn all the new types of techniques and swings. Tiger Wood has been using three different types of swings and is learning the fourth one from his current coach Sean Foley. Many people are interested in golf and wish to play really well. However, they tend to face a lot of problems when it comes to using the right kind of golf swing. You need to know the proper tricks and techniques that will help you with the game. Well, there is nothing to worry about as you can find out more about the different techniques which will help you fix your golf swing issues.

The first problem that causes problems in the game is the improper set up. You need to make sure that your body is properly aligned with the target line before you reach for the ball. Your body alignment should be in a way that your left shoulder should point out and aim your target. If you make even the slightest mistake in this case and your shoulder is not properly aligned then your chances of slicing the ball becomes higher.

Make sure that your grip is tight because it is an important factor as loose grip will create problems while swinging the club. You should be able to see two or three knuckles of your left hand. If you cannot see it then it means that your grip is not proper. In this case you should always consider readjusting your hand to get it in the right position. Grip strength is also an important factor and you need to work towards it. You need to hold the club tightly or else it will move and wobble while hitting the ball causing the ball to go out of course. The pressure exerted should be in the right proportion. Do not hold the club too tightly as the energy that is exerted will not create the right kind of impact.

If you want your ball to head in a straight direction then you need to make sure that the club hits it squarely. In this case the lower portion of your body should turn totally through the impact. Normally the players tend to hit the ball towards the right because they do not turn properly. If you want you can practice this position in advance so that you do not end up slicing the ball.

Always make sure that you do not rush your golf swing because the extra amount of speed will make your ball fly towards a greater distance which might not be needed. This technique does not work in most of the cases because your hands tend to get ahead of your swing causing the club to face open. Thus, these were some useful tips to improve your golf swing.

Golf Fitness Stretching and Exercises to Improve Your Golf Swing

Golf fitness stretching and corollary golf exercises are an easy way to improve your golf swing. The utilization of golf exercises within a golf fitness program can enhance many aspects of the golf swing and your golf game. The amateur golfer can improve their ability to execute the golf swing, complete a full shoulder turn, generate more clubhead speed, and hit more accurate shots with improved flexibility. The process an amateur golfer can improve their flexibility is through golf stretches.

Before providing information on what are the best stretches for golfer let us define flexibility. Flexibility refers to range of motion. It is defined as the optimal extensibility of all soft tissues in the body (Michael Clark, Director, National Academy of Sports Medicine). The biomechanics of the swing require the golfer to swing the club on the correct plane. In order for the biomechanics of the swing to be executed correctly every muscle, ligament, and tendon in the body must allow for optimal joint range of motion.

Increased flexibility is the benefit of stretching. These benefits occur through the elongation (i.e. stretching) of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments). Typically certain muscles in your body are in a shortened position (i.e. "tight"), causing restrictions in the golf swing. Golf stretches (i.e. elongating) these muscles alleviates these muscles alleviates these restrictions allowing for the ranges of motion required of the golf swing to develop.

Because the golf swing requires a large range of motion from multiple joints (ankle, hip, thoracic spine, and shoulder), I suggest performing a series of flexibility exercises for the entire body. Many golfers will find "tightness" in the hamstrings, hips, lower, and upper back causing restrictions in their joint range of motions as well as golf swing. This may require additional golf stretches to assist in the restrictions caused by these muscles.

Guidelines to golf stretches are quite simple. A comprehensive series of stretches for golf should be completed a minimum of four times per week. If an individual desires these exercises can be performed daily. In addition to performing golf stretches multiple times per week each exercise should be take each target muscle passively to the point of "tension" and holding the stretch for 30 seconds. Do not attempt to "bounce" or "push" the stretch for this can result in injury. Pay strict attention to technique with each of your stretches. It also recommended to perform a warm-up prior to your golf stretches to get more out of each exercise. The following are the stretches I often recommend to the amateur player; Rotators, 90/90 Hamstrings, Cats Down, Cats Up, Piriformis, Kneeling Hip Flexor, Openers, Standing Calf, and Standing Quadriceps.

Remember how golf fitness stretches and other types of golf exercises can improve many aspects of your golf swing. The placement of golf fitness stretches in a golf training program is one step to improvement in your golf swing. Keep in mind what is required from the body in regards to the golf swing, and that one of these requirements is drawing the club through a long range of motion. If your body lacks the flexibility to perform this requirement of the golf swing, the ability to execute and efficient golf swing will be compromised.

Golf Swing Tips - How to Stop Topping Golf Balls and Improve Your Golf Swing

Do your golf balls just roll along the ground and never get into the air? This is called topping the ball, and happens because your club contacts the ball above its equator. Ironically, many golfers make the problem worse by trying to "help" the ball into the air - trying to lift or scoop the golf ball off the turf. So, what is the correct way to stop topping the golf ball?

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. Fundamentally, the problem is that your golf swing mechanics are incorrect in some way. Assuming that you are using the correct golf club, its design will ensure that ball will fly into the air when you swing the club correctly. The fastest way to stop topping golf balls is to consult a golf pro or golf swing coach. He will be able to see where your worst mistakes are and suggest the best drills to improve your golf swing. Once you learn to perform those drills correctly, this embarrassing problem of dribbling your golf ball on the ground will be fixed.

Of course, not everyone has access to a competent golf pro. Before you start surfing the web for a solution, let me give you a warning. Some websites use the terms topping the golf ball, skulling, and hitting the ball thin interchangeably. Not to mention that the golf swing tips contradict each other. Let me suggest a more old fashioned alternative. Go hit your local library for some golf swing instruction books. Look for the books which teach golf swing techniques or show the correct golf swing mechanics. Browse them and borrow the books which you can understand. Read them carefully and take notes. Then go hit a few dozen golf balls and capture it all on video. Analyze what you see, and compare it against your notes. You should see some major deviations from the norm. Once you correct these mistakes, you should have improved your golf swing and stopped topping your golf balls.

Pursuing shortcuts tends to be a hit or miss affair. I must admit that sometimes you just do not have time to do it right. In such cases, you just have to cross your fingers, make a quick prayer and hope for the best. So, here are two quick golf swing tips to stop topping golf balls:

Aim one inch in front of the ball.

Stand with the ball further back in your stance. Swing your club as usual, and you will hit the ball lower.

Some golfers find that they only top the ball with their drivers and low-numbered irons. This shows that they have difficulty controlling the added power when they swing these clubs. Here are three golf swing tips to help you:

Practice half-swings until you consistently hit the ball without topping, then graduate to practicing full-swings

Practice swinging the golf club in slow motion to ingrain the correct movement into your muscle memory. Once you are satisfied that you fully understand the correct golf swing mechanics, gradually increase the speed you swing the club.

Practice your golf swing with old-style blade irons. These old-fashioned clubs have tiny sweet spots. They give you excellent feedback when you do not hit the ball right - the club vibrates strongly and stings your hands. Once you can contact the ball with the sweet spot consistently, you will stop topping the golf ball.

Topping the golf ball once is embarrassing. Topping the golf ball swing after swing is humiliating. The fastest way to stop topping golf balls and improve your golf swing is to ask a golf swing coach to look at your swing. The next best way is to study and understand the correct golf swing mechanics.

Improve Your Golf Swing Forever

When you're playing golf badly it isn't a lot of fun. If you're like most golfers, you want to improve, not just hack around the golf course. Finding ways to improve your golf game, then applying what you've learned and practicing, is the number one way to get ahead of the game.

Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. Keep the good energy flowing and don't give in to any negative thoughts. Golf requires tough mental fitness as well as physical fitness and is often overlooked.

Trust your golf club to do the job it was intended to do. It's difficult for a golfer to practice hitting shots longer than short pitch shots unless one pays to play golf or pays to practice at a driving range or indoor golf training facility. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle and not the strength that's applied to it.

Use the basic 'hitchhiker' position when you're working on your backswing. Try not to grip the club too tightly. The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player's body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists.

Putts and short chips are ideally played without much movement of the body, but most other golf shots are played using variants of the full golf swing. Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing. Ask your golf pro to evaluate your posture while swinging.

Many golfers who are strongly left-handed in their daily life prefer the right-handed golf swing. When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you're holding a soccer ball between your knees.

To prevent injury and improve swing speed and distance requires your body to be both strong and flexible. Many golfers have improved their golf game by concentrating on golf fitness. Workouts with straight crunches won't improve your swing or driving distance; concentrate on weighted rotational exercises instead.

Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. There are golf swing aids that act as driving range simulators. Golf magazines often review the newest golf swing aids and are reviewed by golfers, making it easy to choose the right one for you.

Be careful about the claims on TV commercials and magazine ads; seek expert advice before you buy because they may not live up to their claims. You can find golf swing aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one golf swing aid and go to work on your swing.

If you're looking for an aid to improve your stance they're not hard to find. Make sure to look for reviews and ratings online for any golf swing aid you're considering. Sporting goods stores have golf aids to improve your game.

Golf swing aids will improve your golf game. Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing.

If you've hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time. If you apply both physical and mental workouts, golf swing improvement will be your reward. Take as many private lessons as you can afford with a good golf pro.

Improve Golf Swing - 7 Simple Tips to Improving Your Golf Swing

Whether you are new to the sport of golf or you have been playing for years, odds are you are on a quest to find the right tips and tricks that can help you improve your golf swing. While the sport of golf requires a lot of skill to obtain a good score, a golfer's technique is equally important in working towards the score of their dreams. Here are some simple tips that can help to improve golf swing so you can finally obtain the game of your dreams.

First, always remember to look. Whether you are playing at your local course, or practicing your swing at the driving range, odds are you have seen a few golfers use a technique that has given them the ability to hit the ball farther than you have ever dreamed was possible. Instead of feeling inferior to their talent, don't be afraid to take note of their technique. How they stand, their body position and even how they lift the club can help you make tweaks to your own technique. Even the smallest change can have a positive effect, helping you to improve golf swing.

Second, consider having someone video tape your swing or practice in front of a mirror. While it's nearly impossible to see what you are doing wrong, having someone video tape you gives you the ability to playback your swing so you can critique what you are doing wrong. A mirror can give you the same result, but video may be better. That way you can replay it and possibly begin a library so over time you can see how far your golf swing has come.

Third, consider purchasing a video on how to improve your swing. Just like any other subject, one of the easiest ways to learn new tips and tricks is to purchase a video created by the pros. Videos can show you the proper technique and then it's up to you to duplicate that technique. While it may take some trial and error, a video gives you an easy reference to refer back to.

Fourth, think about enlisting the help of a local golf pro. Depending on where you live, many courses may have a resident golf pro who offers either group or private lessons. If you go into it with an open mind, a certified pro can do wonders to help improve golf swing. Just as long as you realize that your swing needs help, a pro can do wonders to break you of what you are doing wrong while teaching you what is right.

Fifth, always be wary of your body position. If you have been playing golf for any length of time, odds are you know that improper body position can make you hit the ball anywhere but down the fairway. If you have spent any amount of time learning new tricks, you will want to make sure you make a conscious effort to pay attention to your body position. If you realize that you are out of position, make a change before you swing. One minor adjustment can help improve golf swing for years to come.

Sixth, never rush your swing. Whether you have already been having a bad game, or you are in a rush to finish because you are on a time crunch, rushing your swing can cause you to use improper form that can have a negative effect on your ball placement. No matter how busy your schedule, take the time to slow down. While it may take a few extra minutes, you have nothing but a better score to gain.

Lastly, make sure to practice, practice, and practice. All the tips in the world will not help you improve your score unless you practice, and practice often. If you have ever heard the term that practice makes perfect, this could not be truer than for the game of golf. If you want to improve golf swing, then most definitely get out to the range and practice the tips you have learned.

These are just a few of the most popular tips that can help improve golf swing. Remember to slow down and enlist the help of others and you will be on your way to improving your swing for years to come.

Tips to Improve Your Golf Swing

Now you are ready to start the golf swing, to uncover the first fatal flaws that appear, with the horrible shots they produce, and to learn the first of the magic moves that will cut strokes from your score.

Ironically, these first flaws that creep into the average player's golf swing produce an effect that is the exact opposite of what he wants. Just as you have, he has read and heard all his golfing life that certain things are essential. The first of these is that you must pivot, the second is that the club must be taken away from the ball inside the projected line of flight, the third is that the wrists should be broken late and upward. Now let's see what happens when you put them into practice.

You twist your body as you start the take-away. This brings the club back on an inside line. Fine. It opens the face of the club too. Excellent, you say, for you know it should be open at the top of the golf swing. You delay the wrist break as long as possible and then let the wrists break upward. Then what happens? The very thing you wanted most to avoid. You hit the ball from the outside in, with an open face (usually), and you get an outlandish slice. If you close the face on the golf swing you probably will get a pull, or as mother (if it's closed too much), or a hook. If the club is outside the line far enough, you will even get that most horrible of all shots, a shank. Your golf swing is the primary thing to perfect in your golf game.

You are then thoroughly crestfallen. You have done everything you'd been told to do and you still hit those awful shots. Why? You hit them because your early movements in your golf swing got you into such a position at the top that you could hardly hit anything else. Your early pivot, your attempt to "turn in a barrel," didn't permit you to transfer your weight to your right leg. You kept too much of it on your left leg.

Taking the club away inside (it was probably quite sharply inside) got it moving too flat, as well as opening the face. Then, to get the swing farther along, you had to bring the club up. At that point things began to get tight and uncomfortable. To ease them you stopped the turn that your shoulders were making and let your left wrist collapse, or bend back and gounder the club. This let you raise the club and get what you felt was a full golf swing, without being uncomfortable. The face of the club, of course, was wide open at the top.

What happened next was inevitable. You started the golf swing by regripping with your left hand, which had loosened, which made you get the club head started moving too soon. Your weight, being mostly on your left leg, moved back to the right leg. You turned your hips and shoulders sharply, which threw the club onto the outside-in line you were trying to avoid. And you came down across the ball.

Chances are that as you did, your left knee snapped back and locked and your right knee bent straight out in front of you. And your golf swing follow-through, what there was of it, carried the club around you instead of up and out after the ball.

You, however, see none of these things as the cause of your bad shots. You feel only that you haven't done well enough what you are trying to do, and in your efforts to meet the standards, you exaggerate the actions. You don't improve. You may easily get worse. And you finally end your practice session frustrated and dejected, or your round, if you are playing, with a shameful score. So follow these tips to improve your golf swing today.

Improve Your Golf Swing

How many of you golfers out there have spent hours trying to learn that perfect golf swing, that will just send the ball flying off into outer space. Playing the game of golf is just like any other sport; you have to practice at it, before you can improve your golf swing.

In order, to improve your golf swing you need to find out what you are doing wrong. All this can be done while practicing at the driving range. For instance whichever hand you write with, is going to be the one holding onto the club lower then your other hand. Your other hand is going to be at the very top of the golf club.

Now look down and make sure that your hands are holding the club right. If they are then you are holding the club the proper way. Now then, let us look at your swing, how far apart are your legs; they should be even with your shoulders. Ok you should be ready to swing.

When swinging the golf club you are going to want to slightly, bend either your right or left knee from, whichever side you are swinging the club. Place the ball on a tee and sit your club down next to the ball. Now you are going to want to grip the club loosely you do not want a firm grip on the club because this tends to through your shot off.

After you bring the club up you are going to swing down towards the ball. Try to keep your arms bent at all times and follow through with the swing. In addition, as you hit the ball watch which way it goes, so you can continue to improve your golf swing.

You may have to practice several times a day, before you ever find that perfect swing. Moreover, when you find that perfect swing, you will be unstoppable at least on the driving range. However, the golf course itself is a completely different ball game.

Moreover, now that you have found that perfect swing, why not try it out on the golf course a few times and see how you do. When you master that, you could play your friends in a game of golf. They all will be asking questions about how you can hit the ball so far and so good. Simply tell them that if they meet you down at the driving range, you will be happy to show them how they can improve their golf swing.
