Natural Golf Swing

Golf swings have gone through some evolution since golf sport was begun. New concepts and ideas are being incorporated into the game. However, there are some tips that can never be replaced which are commonly referred to as the natural golf swing.

Golf Swing Analysis - Camera Positioning

Following on from our previous Golf Swing Analysis article I would like to give you my insight into depth perception and camera positioning for checking the club line at the top of the backswing.
Many coaches including myself would just place one camera position to look at the golf swing. In golf ranges especially where space is restricted what the picture shows and what is actually happening is not exactly the same thing.

Let me try and explain outside golf. Stand opposite a mirror around 6 feet away. Look into that mirror and make a mental note of what you see especially parts of the body at the extreme edges for example your ears. Take a slight step to the right and you will find that your left ear is almost invisible and the right ear you are able to see more.

In a golf swing if you position the camera opposite a point between the feet and the ball. When the club is parallel to the target in reality the actual video clip from the camera suggests the club shaft is pointing to the right.(Across the line) for a right handed golfer.
So to get an accurate reading of the club line at the top of the golf swing it's vital to have the camera opposite that position. You will see that the downswing looks steeper that the previous camera position where it was between the feet and the ball.

The conclusion is that to get an accurate reading of the club line at the top of the swing and the swing plane you need two camera positions. One between the ball and the feet to measure swing plane and one opposite the club at the top of the swing to see club line.

4 Improving Golf Swing Tips

Proper Wrist Action in Golf Swing

There are certain things in golf that will lead a player to either hit or miss a shot. One of the most common reasons for a golfer to miss a shot or in some way come short is not having the proper wrist action in golf swing. It's a mistake that's all too common among weekend golfers and amateurs who don't know the ins and outs of golf. Because controlling the club with one's hands can feel so natural, it often leads to bad shots and even broken wrists.

When you think about the way you hold the club and swing it, there are really only several ways your wrists can move, up and down and forward and backward. When someone uses the forward backward method, it can lead to a broken wrist. The up and down motion is just as bad, cocking them so to speak. The adverse effects of these movements are exactly why the way you hold your golf club is so critical to your game. If you are holding the club incorrectly, it can make for a bad game. Some golfers may seem surprised by this, others not so much. This is the difference between a seasoned golfer and an amateur.

Hinging of the wrists becomes automatic when your left arm is placed in the right position when you go to swing. Your wrists also hinge when your legs move in a forward direction while the club is still moving back. Your ultimate goal is make sure that this hinging of the wrists happens with every shot you take so you'll want to keep the wrist on your left arm flat just like the forearm of your left arm and the back of the hand. If correctly positioned, your wrists will hinge automatically. If not correctly placed, a breaking movement will happen causing many adverse effects, including a lost game.

Golf Swing Help With a Different Approach

Golf swing help is a thought in most amateur golfers minds on a daily basis. The never-ending search for a quick fix to your golf swing. I receive emails every day reading how golfers have tried "everything" and still haven't improved. They have reached a state of desperation in their golf game.

Unless you have 8 hours a day to work on your golf swing like the pros have, you will not be able to achieve that ultimate goal of consistent performance. The golf swing technique of today has become so complicated, that golfers are "paralyzed by over-analysis".

I've heard some great analogies lately!

How about walking? Would we think of every biomechanical movement in every joint of our body when we walk? I don't think so. If that happened, we'd have a lot of frustrated, immobile people out there.

The same thing holds true with golf. Having a basic understanding of how to hit the ball to your chosen target is critical, but after that, you shouldn't have to think of 30 different things to swing the club to make this happen.

The end goal in golf is to get your ball to a target as accurately as you can, and then get it in the hole. With that being said, why are so many golfers not improving? The answer and solution are quite easy.

It's what I say more than a dozen times every day to golfers. "It's your body that swings the club, not the other way around".

Your swing is only as good as your current 'physical' capabilities. Don't you think that makes sense? I mean...if your body is tight (inflexible), do you think you'll be able to make a nice full backswing with minimal tension? No way! That's a physical impossibility.

The ONLY way to be able to achieve optimal swing mechanics with minimal effort is to improve your body's ability to reach these physical points in the golf swing consistently. Whether it's a 90 degree shoulder turn, or hips slightly open with your head stationary behind the ball at impact.

It makes total sense to break down the swing fault you are currently dealing with and look at the physical requirement needed from your body. The more involved I get with improving golf performance, the more interested I'm getting in the biomechanics of the golf swing and how to improve them with the physical approach (both strength and flexibility).

I've seen dramatic results from members of my websites and customers of my golf improvement products, which tells me this is the way to improve your golf swing the quickest. I've had golfers literally tell me they wish they would have taken this approach 20 years ago!

Why not end the frustration once and for all and take a look at the 'source' of your swing fault?

Golf Swing Control - Too Fast Or Too Slow?

Most golfers tend to prefer to swing fast. Why? Because most of us thought that speed is equivalent to power and distance. The harder and faster we swing, the farther the ball will go. Do you agree? To certain extent, this is right. However, one must learn to balance between the stance, posture, movement, timing, etc during the swing. Instead of hitting the ball as hard as you can, you have to learn you sweet spot to improve your drive.

The golf swing is the fundamental skill that you need to master before even stepping on the grass. How do you justify if your golf swing is too fast or too slow?

Here are some of the "symptoms" of a fast/hard swing.

1) If your golf ball is going to certain direction every time you hit the ball.

2) Swing path curved each time you hit the ball.

3) You lose your grip when you swing too hard.

4) You lose balance after the full swing.

To counter this problem, focus on the tempo.

Obviously you need to go slow motion to full speed when there is going to be some acceleration at some point. You need to do this smoothly and it is more likely you are to "throw" something off with your hand, weight shift, head and target. If you swing too hard and too fast, you may not get a smooth swing.

Another effective way to monitor whether your golf swing is too fast is to have someone watching how you perform your swing.

You can start counting and see how long it takes for your swing. Alternatively, you can video tape your golf swing practice and monitor your golf swing mistake after each practice together with your teacher or someone you admire in the golf.

Proper practice make perfect.

Make a routine to practice your swing at the driving range and analyze your mistakes. To master the game, always master the game's fundamental first. There is no magic pill that helps you to improve your games with no effort. Besides, you need to learn the right way from the right expert before you can master the games.

Golf Swing Analysis - Biomechanics of Golf Swing - A Narrative

A good golf swing produces a good shot, period. The biomechanics of the golf swing is not a bunch of random parts. No one, and I mean no one, can learn to swing as a series of move this, then this, then this, now this, & then that. It has got to be something that just happens, without conscious thought. The good news is that you probably have a good athletic setup and all you need is to brush it up and be more relaxed. An athletic golf stance and setup is the launching pad for your swing.

The Swing

The left foot is slightly open as this makes it easier for the body to follow through. The right foot should be placed straight forward from the body, at a right angle to the line of flight, so that when you swing the weight will come on the inside of the foot to be able to push away and do the follow through. This position will make your arms hang comfortably in front of your body, to be able to swing more freely. The backswing now starts with the initial rotation - shoulders, hips, hands and arms - an almost simultaneous movement. The downswing begins by pushing your weight from right to left and rotating the body and hips. Remember it is a swing and not a hit. And that is how to perform the perfect golf swing. See, it's that easy. (Stop yelling, I'm just joking!)

The Ball

How do you set up to the ball? There isn't one prescribed ball position, but most of the better players have a ball position that is toward the instep of the left foot. Addressing the ball, both arms are straight but relaxed, and the left shoulder is higher than the right due to the position of the hands. The hands are slightly in front of the ball. After addressing the ball, start your pivot by shifting back to your right foot. On impact the hips are turned with the shoulders parallel to the ball. The ball is said to leave the tee at about 140 mph with a backspin of fifty to sixty rotations per second. Just recall the fantastic feeling when you hit a great shot and imagine that feeling happening every time you hit the ball.

Keys To Improving Your Golf Swing Power

One thing nearly every golfer on the planet wants to do is add distance off the tee. As a result, there is a whole group of marketers who want to sell you the latest gimmicks and training devices to help you gain that extra yardage. Here are the BEST ways to gain distance off the tee.

1. Improve your golf swing! I developed my golf fitness website because I noticed the need to debunk some of the information being put out there by so-called golf fitness gurus and even the golf profession overall. You can NOT gain distance off the tee just by lifting weights or doing any "golf-specific" exercises if you have a significantly flawed swing! Sure, you may increase your swing speed, but that will only make the ball curve further off-line!

For instance, if you have the classic over-the-top golf swing that results in a slice, right there you are limiting your ability to hit the ball further. And, learning a new stretch or exercise will NOT solve this problem!

A hook will always go further than a slice. Learn how to hook the ball by correcting this major swing flaw, and I guarantee you will add yards right away. That is just one example, but the point is to look at ways to improve your golf swing first. If you are able to strike the ball more solidly, you will see an immediate increase in your driving distance!

2. Ok, let's say you do actually have a decent golf swing, but you want to add some yards. What should you do now? Join a gym with the goal of being able to bench press 300 pounds? No, absolutely not. The best way to increase your distance off the tee, if you have a decent swing already, is to improve your flexibility, especially with your shoulders and your trunk. This will allow you to make a fuller shoulder turn. A fuller shoulder turn will help you to widen the arc of your swing, a key component to hitting it long.

This is especially true with older players. As we watch our golf heroes age, they tend to lose flexibility and their swings get shorter and shorter. Arnold Palmer is a clear example of this. If he had focused a bit more on his fitness and flexibility at a younger age, he could have a longer swing than he has now. We can't eliminate all of the issues that come with aging, but we can sure hold them off as long as we can.

With that in mind, get yourself on a stretching program. You can learn a few key stretching exercises that you can do from home in 15 to 20 minutes. Stretching should be done every other day. The hamstrings, back and shoulders are what require the most attention.

3. If you've significantly improved your flexibility, now you can consider ways to increase the power of your golf swing through strength training. Although I believe in developing a balanced, strength training program which will exercise all of the major body parts, you should evaluate your body and identify the weaknesses first.

First and foremost, the most important muscle group for generating power is your legs. The legs are the foundation for the golf swing, and if they are weak, you will not be able to maximize your power. Now, this does not mean you need to be able to squat 500 pounds! I suggest you learn some classic martial arts stances that are meant to increase strength while improving balance. These can be done in the comfort of your own home with no equipment necessary.

After the legs, probably the next most important muscle group is the upper back and shoulders. I have probably benefited significantly from having strong shoulders as a result of my 10 years as a competitive swimmer when I was a kid. Over the years, I have continued to be sure to maintain strength in these areas. Simple pull ups and a set of dumbbells are all you need to work on these areas. Want to increase their strength and work on some cardio at the same time, a rowing machine might be a good investment.

Finally, work on your core strength as well as your arms. Keep this in mind though, you do not need huge arms to add greater distance, and increasing your core strength will not do much either. However, conditioning these areas is important mainly to help avoid injury.

4. Alright, you've got a pretty good golf swing, you've increased your flexibility, and improved on the strength of your body. What else is there!? Well, this is where some more advanced golf swing techniques come into play.

You can have a picture perfect golf swing, but there is a swing sequence that will allow you to increase your golf swing speed significantly at impact. This technique is what some refer to as "cracking the whip" or "lagging the hands." If you watch any of the big power hitters on tour, they all have one thing in common....they start the downswing with their lower body BEFORE their backswing is completed. This causes the arms to lag the lower body, causing that whiplash effect that dramatically increases swing speed right at impact.

Many amateur golfers are so concerned with being in the right position at the top of the backswing that they wait too long to get the downswing started with the lower body, and they lose all the stored up power that results from the coiling of the back swing. If you can get this timing down, you will see a dramatic increase in your driving distance.

One other minor flaw in the golf swing of many amateurs is the lack of wrist action in their golf swings. Most are concerned with hitting the ball straight so they try very hard to limit the action in their hands. This actually defeats that purpose and can result in a greater slice, if that is their typical ball flight. What they really need to do is let the natural rotation of the forearms occur at the bottom of the golf swing when impact occurs.

Keep this example in mind. Remember Kirk Gibson's home run to win the game for the Dodgers in their World Series against the A's? He had no power in his legs due to bad knees. Yet, he was able to hit that home run just by flicking his wrists and rotating his forearms. Wade Boggs, renowned for being a line drive hitter, was said to be able to hit balls out of the park at will during batting practice since he had such great hands.

Among golfers, Chi Chi Rodriguez is an example of a player with a wristy golf swing that allowed him to hit the ball pretty far for a guy who weighed under 150 pounds.

Learn to incorporate the hands and wrists better in your golf swing, and you will be able to generate more power.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that there are a variety of ways to improve the power of your golf swing through golf strength training and fitness. However, you must first improve your golf swing in order to generate more power. If you are able to develop a sound golf swing, the possibilities become endless.

3 Simple Golf Swing Tips That Can Make A Difference

Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world. Tournament such as these are held in different countries simultaneously with others even shown on television.

Almost everyone in this game wants to be as good as the pros. That person may idolize someone like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods or Greg Norman and will do anything to be just like the stars.

Here are three simple golf swings that can make a difference.

1. A good shoulder turn is important. Unfortunately, a lot of people misunderstand the proper way to do it thus making it worse than it was before.

This mistake originates from the length of the back swing, which many believe is supposed to generate power. In an attempt to make it longer, the person will allow the left heel to come up to far off the ground making the hip turn too much.

This creates a turn but it doesn't produce coil. If done correctly, the back swing should be to stretch or coil which as a result helps create power. The length of the back swing then should be determined by how much coil can be created and not how far back the individual can turn before taking the shot.

2. Allowing the chin to rest against the chest makes it virtually impossible to swing from the left arm across the upper in the back swing. This mistake does not create weight transfer from one side to the other thus making it too steep and not allowing the ball to travel very far.

The proper way to do it will be to keep the chin up and allow the left arm to move freely across the chest. This will give the individual the wide arc needed to hit the ball in the right direction.

3. When the pressure is up, many players want to hit the ball as fast as possible to be done with it. This destroys the natural rhythm of doing it the right way and diminishing the chances of winning on that hole.

The person has two options when this happens. The first is to panic while the other is to face the music and play hard. It is times like these that the player must remember that it is all in the head.

To prevent from swinging to fast, it is best to think of something else when this happens. A good example could be a chain tied to the club head and the weight of this will slow down the swing making everything else follow accordingly.

Nobody became a professional overnight. It takes time to practice by going through the motion in front of a mirror, doing some shots in the range or out there in the green. By practicing these three tips consistently, the person will notice the improvements from before and even win in the game.

Tips to Improve Your Golf Swing

Now you are ready to start the golf swing, to uncover the first fatal flaws that appear, with the horrible shots they produce, and to learn the first of the magic moves that will cut strokes from your score.

Ironically, these first flaws that creep into the average player's golf swing produce an effect that is the exact opposite of what he wants. Just as you have, he has read and heard all his golfing life that certain things are essential. The first of these is that you must pivot, the second is that the club must be taken away from the ball inside the projected line of flight, the third is that the wrists should be broken late and upward. Now let's see what happens when you put them into practice.

You twist your body as you start the take-away. This brings the club back on an inside line. Fine. It opens the face of the club too. Excellent, you say, for you know it should be open at the top of the golf swing.You delay the wrist break as long as possible and then let the wrists break upward. Then what happens? The very thing you wanted most to avoid. You hit the ball from the outside in, with an open face (usually), and you get an outlandish slice. If you close the face on the golf swing you probably will get a pull, or as mother (if it's closed too much), or a hook. If the club is outside the line far enough, you will even get that most horrible of all shots, a shank. Your golf swing is the primary thing to perfect in your golf game.

You are then thoroughly crestfallen. You have done everything you'd been told to do and you still hit those awful shots. Why? You hit them because your early movements in your golf swing got you into such a position at the top that you could hardly hit anything else. Your early pivot, your attempt to "turn in a barrel," didn't permit you to transfer your weight to your right leg. You kept too much of it on your left leg.

Taking the club away inside (it was probably quite sharply inside) got it moving too flat, as well as opening the face. Then, to get the swing farther along, you had to bring the club up. At that point things began to get tight and uncomfortable.To ease them you stopped the turn that your shoulders were making and let your left wrist collapse, or bend back and gounder the club. This let you raise the club and get what you felt was a full golf swing, without being uncomfortable. The face of the club, of course, was wide open at the top.

What happened next was inevitable. You started the golf swing by regripping with your left hand, which had loosened, which made you get the club head started moving too soon. Your weight,being mostly on your left leg, moved back to the right leg. You turned your hips and shoulders sharply, which threw the club onto the outside-in line you were trying to avoid. And you came down across the ball.

Chances are that as you did, your left knee snapped back and locked and your right knee bent straight out in front of you. And your golf swing follow-through, what there was of it, carried the club around you instead of up and out after the ball.

You, however, see none of these things as the cause of your bad shots. You feel only that you haven't done well enough what you are trying to do, and in your efforts to meet the standards, you exaggerate the actions. You don't improve. You may easily get worse. And you finally end your practice session frustrated and dejected, or your round, if you are playing, with a shameful score. So follow these tips to improve your golf swing today.

Golf Swing Speed and Golf Arc

Golf swing speed and golf arc width have a direct correlation - the larger the arc the faster the club head travels. However, many players push the width of their arc to the point that they lose control of their swing. How does a golfer maximize arc without losing balance and their leverage position?

Quieting the hands on the takeaway is the first step to finding the maximum arc. Grabbing the club and snatching it back at takeaway generally causes an early wrist hinge which robs the golfer of arc width and makes it very difficult to maintain lag in the downswing. Neutral hands in the takeaway and delaying the wrist hinge until the hands are around belt high maximizes arc and swing speed.

The next major key is to maintain a constant grip pressure throughout the swing. In general as grip pressure increases the arc width decreases. Starting with neutral hands and maintaining light to medium grip pressure throughout the swing allows the arc to follow its most efficient path, which leads to the greatest swing speed.

The "low and slow" takeaway drill is great for maximizing golf arc. Take the club back low to the ground and slowly for at least a foot. Play with this some on the range and see how long you can keep the club low. Make sure you keep your weight FIRMLY on the INSIDE of your right foot and your right knee SOLID. With a bit of practice you will learn to feel how to maintain your balance and leverage positions while maximizing your arc and swing speed.
